Aromatherapy Massage

What Is Aromatherapy?

DSC09431Aromatherapy is a complementary therapy which involves the use of pure essential oils. These fragrant oils are distilled from various parts of plants, flowers, herbs and trees, each of which have different therapeutic properties. If you would like to experience a simplified version of aromatherapy, crush some fresh rosemary leaves, or some lavender flowers between your fingers and inhale the penetrating and stimulating scent.

Therapeutic Aromatherapy Massage

This is the classic aromatherapy treatment, triggering the body’s natural healing processes by using lymphatic massage and essential oils to stimulate the flow of blood and lymph fluid. The aromas also act upon the emotional centre in the brain (the limbic system), which governs the way we feel.

How The Oils Work

Essential oils are composed of tiny molecules, which are easily dissolved in alcohol, emulsifiers and particularly fats. This allows them to penetrate the skin easily and work into the body by mixing with the fatty tissue.

As these highly volatile essences evaporate they are also inhaled, thus entering the body via the millions of sensitive cells that line the nasal passages. These send messages straight to the brain, and affect the emotions by working on the limbic system (this is where our moods, emotion and memories are stored), which also controls the major functions of the body. Fragrance is the catalyst that also brigns up emotions and instinctive responses that are linked to the situations surrounding the memory of the smell.

Every smell, whether you are conscious of it or not, creates an experience of the senses. Thus in an aromatherapy treatment the essential oils may be able to enhance both your physical and psychological well-being at the same time.

Essential oils are a powerful tool in the support of your mental-emotional health care. When stress affects you, your body responds with the fight/flight mechanism, and as this occurs, your conscious-thinking brain (the cortex) gets largely by-passed as older more primitive areas take over.

Essential oils enter your olfatory sense (your sense of smell) and their signal is taken directly to the older parts of the brain, namely the limbic system, which governs your memories and emotional states.

If you are already in a stressed state you can smell one of the relaxing oils such as lavender and help to calm yourself. As you calm yourself you can access the cortex more easily and start to investigate solutions rather than remain stressed by the problem.

What To Expect In a Treatment

Massage treatments are tailored to meet the individual needs of each client. During the first treatment an approximately 20 min. consultation is therefore essential to fully assess and understand your needs, as well as the symptoms your condition presents. All personal information is treated in absolute confidentiality. The duration and frequency of treatments is very much your personal choice, but for those presenting specific symptoms or conditions the preparation of a treatment plan in discussion with me is often helpful.

All massages are done with special attention to your dignity. Any areas not been worked on will be covered with a beautiful sheet at all times.
